Today, all we want to do is to retell Mark’s account of the resurrection of Jesus.

Mary Magdalene, Mary and Salome

According to Mark’s gospel, after the Sabbath following the death and burial of Jesus, Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Jesus and Salome bought spices for the purpose of going to anoint the body of Jesus.

So in the early morning of the next day, just after sunrise, they went to the tomb. As they were trying to figure out who would roll away the big stone at the mouth of the tomb for them, they saw that the stone had already been rolled away.

A Young Man Dressed in a White Robe

When the women entered the tomb they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side. And he said to them, “Do not be amazed. You seek Jesus the Nazarene who was crucified. He has risen.”

He further directed them to go and tell the disciples of Jesus and Peter that he was going before them to Galilee as he had told them.

Resurrection Appearances

In the story of the resurrection of Jesus according to Mark, Jesus made several appearances to his disciples. Here come the major resurrection appearances of Jesus.

Appearance to Mary Magdalene

Early on the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene from whom he had cast out seven demons.

Jesus Appeared in the Countryside

After this he appeared in another form to two of them as they were walking to the countryside.

Appearance to Eleven Disciples

Later, he appeared to the eleven disciples.

As they sat at a table, he accused them of unbelief and hardness of heart because they had not believed those who saw him after he had risen.

The Great Commission and Ascension

Finally, Jesus commanded his disciples to go into the world and preach the gospel to the whole of creation.

He was then taken up to heaven.
