Prescribed Texts for WASSCE Literature-in-English 2016 – 2020

Are you planning to write the WASSCE elective Literature-in-English paper any time between now and the year 2020?

Here is a concise list of the Literature texts you need to study for your WASSCE.

Please note that the syllabus and the set texts are the same for both school and private candidates.

African Prose

Select only one from the following:

  • Amma Darko: Faceless
  • Bayo Adebowale: Lonely Days

Non-African Prose

Select only one from the following:

  • Richard Wright: Native Son
  • Horace Walpole: The Castle of Otranto (from 2017)

African Drama

Select only one from the following:

  • Frank Ogodo Ogbeche: Harvest of Corruption
  • Dele Charley: The Blood of a Stranger

Non-African Drama

Select only one from the following:

  • Oliver Goldsmith: She Stoops to Conquer
  • Lorraine Hansberry: A Raisin in the Sun

African Poetry

Study all six:

  • Birago Diop: Vanity
  • Gabriel Okara: Piano and Drums
  • Lenrie Peters: The Panic of Growing Older
  • Gbemisola Adeoti: Ambush
  • Kofi Awoonor: The Anvil and the Hammer
  • Gbanabom Hallowell: The Dining Table

Non-African Poetry

Study all six:

  • Alfred Tennyson: Crossing the Bar
  • William Morris: The Proud King
  • George Herbert: The Pulley
  • William Blake: The School Boy
  • Robert Frost: Birches
  • William Shakespeare: Shall I Compare Thee to a Summer’s Day?
