International Court of Justice: Functions

The time has finally come for you to know the major functions of The International Court of Justice (ICJ) of the United Nations.

Introduction

For a better understanding of the functions of the ICJ, we need to, first of all, identify the composition and status of this important organ of the United Nations.

STATUS: The International Court of Justice is the main judicial organ of the United Nations.

MEMBERSHIP: It is made up of fifteen (15) eminent judges elected every nine (9) years.

HEADQUARTERS: The Hague, in The Netherlands.

Functions of the ICJ

Here are the key functions performed by the International Court of Justice.

  1. Settlement of disputes between nations e.g. border dispute between Ethiopia and Eritrea and between Nigeria and Cameroon over the oil-rich Bakassi Peninsula.

2. Giving of legal advice to the other organs of the United Nations.

3. Resolution of disagreements over the right interpretation of international law or treaties and determination of appropriate reparation (penalties) to be paid.

4. Promotion of international justice and respect for human rights

5. Law – making function. i.e. international law through judicial precedence or case law.
