- And, finally, I do not consider myself to be your regular academic prodigy. No, I am definitely not.

I still believe that I was fortunate to get A1 in WASSCE English because I had two things going for me. These are strategy and divine grace (that’s if you believe in that kind of stuff).
Don’t worry if you don’t. Because I still believe that strategy and attitude will naturally place any serious-minded person in the way of divine grace.
You do not need to go asking for luck or support from the Universe to enable you to get a grade A or B in English by taking part in a dangerously noisy, cardiac-arrest-inducing prayer vigil. No. That’s also a fact. Take it or leave it.
Don’t get me wrong. In my opinion, prayer is great. But effective prayer is definitely not what prayer has been reduced to these days. There is an article on the Teachings of James on Effective Prayer. It might help you to appreciate my point.
Are we digressing? It looks like we are. So let’s get back to the business of the day.
I am about to show you the strategy and attitude I used to get A1 in WAEC English Language. And I strongly believe that you will have a similar result in your coming high school English Language exam. That is if you adopt these tips as part of your personal strategy.
So here we go.
1. Aim High and Make Up Your Mind About It
The fact that you’re still reading this is enough proof of your desire to succeed. Because desire is a vital ingredient for any form of achievement. This is what Napoleon Hill’s book, Think And Grow Rich says.
Tell yourself you will not settle for anything lower than a grade A in high school English.
Aim for the moon, if you miss, you may hit a star.

Then commit yourself to begin taking all the actions I’m yet to show you. It is true that, naturally, you might not have all it takes to obtain A1 in high school English.
But with an investment of the best of your time, talent and effort, trust me, you will make a grade that is good enough to take you to the next level.
So make up your mind about this and never look back.
2. Start a Long Time Before
Take it from me, no one wakes up this afternoon and gets a grade A in English tomorrow morning by chance. Even the widely-trusted Universal Law of Attraction will not help you if that’s what you think. Here are the things to start doing a very long time before the test.
They are what all extremely successful candidates in any English Language test do.
What do I mean by ‘a very long time’? Well, it depends.
I believe the minimum is one year before the date of the exam. For most students who end up performing excellently in any English Language test, it starts right from childhood. Maybe when they were in lower primary school or even before.
But hey, if all you’ve got is a few days or weeks, you still can do a lot if you really want to.
Read A Lot of Language Books
Yes, read as many books (and any other form of text) written in good English as you can. Then read books in any other language you can speak and read. Because the rules of language usage are generally so much alike. They cut across all language barriers.
Therefore, reading extensively helps to reinforce your language usage skills. Make sure to read like your whole life depends on nothing but reading.
Today, with your e-reader or a computer with an internet connection, you can have a lot of websites that feature excellently written text in English.
Are you scared already? Well, reading is fun. And if for nothing at all, just read because you have a lofty goal ahead of you.
You and I know you want to get A1 in WASSCE English. So you have no other choice but to read like crazy, so to speak.
Listen to Good Academic English Everywhere
Among the best places to access and learn English for Academic purposes are radio, television, and the Internet. Listen to both native speakers and second-language speakers of English. The higher their level of formal education, the better.
Radio and TV discussion programmes on global issues such as human rights, democracy, economy, climate change, and, of course, the pandemic will expose you to the most effective ways to effectively use English for academic purposes.
The same goes for movies and television documentaries.
These are some of the secrets of those high school students who get A1 in WASSCE English with cheeky ease.
Get Familiar With The WAEC English Syllabus
The WAEC English syllabus is important because it gives you a definite scope within which you will create and implement a killer test prep strategy.
Study the High School English syllabus very closely with an eye for the following.
- Know all the topics to cover
- Identify all the sections of the English Language paper.
- Take note of the stated objectives of the syllabus. They help you to know where your focus must be during your studies.
- Make sure to acquire any important books that the syllabus mentions. And begin to read them long before the year of the exam.
- Remember to find out the duration of the whole WAEC English paper. Take note of the recommended time to spend on each section too.
If there are other points of interest in the English syllabus, take good note of them.
3. Months Before The High School English Exam
Now it is less than a year before you enter that exam room. You are getting closer to the day you must give an account of your work as a student of English.
Do the following to make sure you are in the best position to acquit yourself creditably when the time comes.
Revise and Refine Your Personal Study Time Table.

Commit to studying English privately for at least half an hour every day. It is very likely that there are other equally important WAEC subjects competing for your time. So just about thirty minutes of study time for the English Language should be enough.

I know this one is tough to do because I’ve personally been there before.
But you still can do something to help yourself. Why? You can’t do much by way of effective studies when you are down with sickness or simply hungry most of the time.
Do not overwork yourself.
Yes, we all agree that hard work is the hallmark of every successful student. But this doesn’t mean you must burden your youthful mind and body with too much studying.
Leave some room for play, entertainment, or refreshment. Moderation is the watchword in all that we do in life.
I will explain this point further, shortly.
Join a Study Group
Can you seriously teach others? And do you enjoy assisting your friends to understand a concept they are struggling with? Then this is the time to help your fellow students understand what you find so easy to grasp.
There is a benefit to this. Teaching others helps you understand things better. Repeating your explanations makes important concepts stick like superglue up there. You know what I mean, right?
Now if you’re struggling with those problem topics such as Summary Writing and Comprehension, this is the time to let your friends help you.
I’ve said it before. Sometimes, a fellow student’s explanation of a topic is much clearer and easier to digest than a teacher’s, even if that teacher happens to hold a very high academic qualification in the subject.
Ask for Help from a Tutor
Your English Language tutor can be of great help to you at this stage. Ask him/her all the relevant questions both in and out of class.
Count yourself blessed if you have a teacher with a positive attitude. Make good use of all the help he or she is willing to give you in your high school English Language learning journey.
For example, write multiple essays based on WAEC English past questions and let him/her mark and correct them for you. Do the same for comprehension passages and summary questions too. Do not ever leave out the objective questions section.

- Assess your preparations so far.
- Identify areas that need improving.

Get Your Tools Ready

This is the time to listen more to your favourite music. If you’re like me, you can listen to relaxing music from online places like SoundCloud. Go out and have positive fun especially if you’re an extrovert.
And if you share my type of personality (I’m more of an introvert), then you can just do the things that make you come alive. For people like us, one of these fun activities is reading a good story or burying ourselves deep into refreshing music.
Read the stories you love. Watch the greatest films from Nollywood, Ghallywood, or even Kumawood.
Ever heard of Kumawood before? Well, not to worry if you haven’t. You can still unwind with or without them.
Have fun seeing your most-beloved actors perform on screen.
Do you love YouTube but have not had enough time for it because of your studies? This is the time to go in there and listen to some of the best motivational speakers.
And if you’re a fan of the English Premier League, the Spanish La Liga, or the German Bundesliga, you can go watch some of their greatest football Matches on YouTube.
All the greatest football players in the world, past and present, are on parade there. Enjoy yourself watching them do their thing. The experience will help you do yours too.
You must not rule out your best action movies or horror films from Hollywood itself. Just refuse to take yourself too seriously. It is a secret that has worked for me in every exam I take.

Are you interested in fashion? Spoil yourself a little with some window shopping on your smartphone or laptop.
E-commerce sites like Amazon, AliExpress, Jumia, and Jiji are all there for you. It costs almost nothing to do some window shopping online, you know?
Remember, all I’m asking you to do is to begin to put yourself in the best possible state of mind for the English Language test before you.
Sleep Well
This is not the time to stay awake in the night for too long. You need to sleep well to have a clear mind and a healthy body.
The unpleasant truth is that depriving yourself of a good night’s rest days before your high school examination is never the best thing to do. People do this because they failed to prepare well in advance for the exam.
Then here comes the bombshell. Go to bed early the night before the WAEC English Language test. Trust me, it will boost your chances of scoring a grade A when your results are released. How? Because a good sleep will give you the best frame of mind to effectively do what lies ahead of you.
5. On the Day of the WASSCE English Language Paper
Interestingly, there is not much to do on the day of your high school English Language test. Except that you have to go in there and perform your magic.
Be the hero or the heroine that you’ve promised yourself years before.
You’ve got your master plan now. That is if you’ve acted on the strategic steps I’ve outlined in this article.
All you need now is to go in for the kill. And, you surely must.
6. Bonus Points
Note these few additional points. They will do you a lot of good.
- Set off early from wherever you spent the night.
For most of us, it is our home. It is best to get to the exam centre at least thirty minutes before the action begins.
- Make sure not to put inside your belly any type of food that has the potential to cause you problems.

How to Avoid Deviation in Essay Writing
- Go along with all your tools – pens, rulers, and so on.
- Avoid falling for any temptation to indulge in an exam malpractice.
- Write very fast right from the beginning.
Do not wait for the invigilator to say the dreaded ‘FIVE MINUTES MORE’ before you learn how to write fast. It might be too late for your redemption.
- Read through it.
Go over your work at least once before the time is up for you to hand them over to the invigilator. You certainly do not want your examiner to see your mistakes.
We all make them so help yourself and read over. I’m talking about errors in spelling, tense, capitalization, and the use of punctuation marks among many others.
- Note and follow all instructions.
For example, make sure all your shadings in the English Language Lexis and Structure objective paper are correct.
Answer only the required number of questions.
Also, your name must be on all your answer scripts.
Finally, just hand over your paper when the time is due. There is no need to court unnecessary trouble for yourself after all these years and months of hard work.
You will certainly do well. Because you have done all there is to do to get A1 in WASSCE English.
