I present to you a summary of Chapter One of Amma Darko’s novel, Faceless.

Poison’s unsuccessful attempt to rape Fofo

Three significant incidents to note in chapter one of Amma Darko’s novel, Faceless, are

  • Fofo’s dream of a comfortable life
  • Poison’s unsuccessful attempt to rape Fofo
  • Fofo and Odarley’s visit to the rubbish dump

At the beginning of chapter one of Faceless, we are introduced to Fofo, the heroine of the novel.

Fofo is a fourteen-year-old street child.

She has just acquired a new job at the Agbogbloshie market which involves washing carrots at the vegetable wholesale market.

In order to avoid the risk of losing this job, she decided to spend the night on an old cardboard in front of a provision store in the market instead of the usual rendezvous shared with her friends at the nearby squatters enclave of Sodom and Gomorrah.

She is a petty thief, picking the pockets of unsuspecting victims. So when one week after, she calls on Odarley unexpectedly one early morning, Odarley suspects that this could be due to the fact that her new employer may have found out that she is a pick-pocket and therefore decides not to have anything to do with her. Or that she has been caught trying to pick someone’s pocket.

The truth, however, is that while she is apparently enjoying a dream about a comfortable life (the kind of life which can only remain every street child’s elusive dream), Poison, the street lord comes and tries to rape her. Fofo cleverly manages to escape this attempted rape by Poison.

This is how we are introduced to the street lord phenomenon epitomized so eloquently by the no-nonsense Poison.

Fofo visits her friend, Odarley, just after the attempted rape incident, at the squatters’ enclave of Sodom and Gomorrah. Poverty, hunger and deprivation, insecurity, poor sanitation, alcohol abuse, premature sex, and watching adult films among others are the normal way of life among the street children.

She tells Odarley about Poison’s attempt to rape her and informs her of her intention to visit her mother to seek clarification regarding Poison’s behaviour.

Fofo and Odarley visit the rubbish dump to attend to nature’s call. While there, they freely converse about many things that affect them as children of the street. The conversation between these two reveals so much about the deplorable conditions of street life.
